The geologist Benjamin Smith Lyman and his mapping assistant, William Smith Munroe, spent years working in Japan during the Meiji era. Enrapt by Japan, Lyman collected hundreds of books on Japanese geography, natural science, art, and culture that have become a valued part of SCUA's holdings.
