Description

One might not expect to find a Santee man in full plains attire living in the middle of Amherst, but Charles Eastman lived on Belchertown Road from 1911-1919. An advocate for native rights, Eastman became known for a series of books and lectures describing Native American history, lives, and beliefs. The photograph was taken by Frank Waugh, the legendary garden designer and founder of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Mass. Agricultural College. The exceptional hand coloring is characteristic of Waugh's work.
