Description
While the elaborate death's heads, skeletons, and symbolic hour glasses captures the imagination when it comes to colonial gravestones, the realities of life in the earliest, smallest, and most remote settlements often produced variable results. In many places, the older stones were often little more than a local cobble or boulder pried from the fields, barely shaped and crudely carved, and set to face west.
