Fifty Photographs: selections from SCUA collections

The sartorial stylings of Michael Metelica

by Gary Cohen, 1973

Many who survived the 1970s rue the day their photographs are unearthed. By 1973, the Brotherhood of the Spirit has become the largest commune in the eastern United States, with hundreds of members and one charismatic, but troubled leader. Michael Metelica stood out in any crowd: the lead singer in the commune band (of course there was a commune band) and self-proclaimed reincarnation of Robert E. Lee, Metelica is seen here in top hat and Confederate flag. His neckwear should earn special mention, but true fashionistas know that a healthy swirl of fringe would truly complete the ensemble.
