It’s not clear why these children are celebrating, but it is undeniable. They were students at an industrial school maintained in support of the Chinese Industrial Cooperative Movement (CIC), organized after the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. The cooperative movement and its schools allowed industry and education to take root throughout unoccupied China.
