Judo reaches the United States
by unidentified photographer, ca.1904
Yoshiaki Yamashita is remembered as and the Prometheus of American judo. During a tour of the United States in 1903-1906, Yamashita, his wife, and an assistant taught the martial art in Seattle, Annapolis, and Washington, D.C. Not knowing the language, Yamashita may have brought this photograph album with him to help depict the throws he was teaching.
As this image suggests, Fude Yamahsita was no blushing bride: she got in the act, demonstrating an armlock on her husband and reminding us all of how dear the theme of women overthrowing the patriarchy is to the SCUA heart
